2019:Thriving in Safety

From Wikimania

Welcome to the Thriving in Safety Space page at Wikimania 2019 in Stockholm!

A safe space to talk about safety

The space Thriving in Safety at Wikimania will take place on Saturday, August 17. Coordinators of the space are:

  • Christel Steigenberger (User:CSteigenberger (WMF), ca@wikimedia.org)
  • User:Mardetanha (mardetanha.wiki@gmail.com)
  • User:HakanIST
  • User:DerHexer (derhexer@wikipedia.de)

Short description

[edit | edit source]

Safety is at the basis of all sustainable development. Providing safety is especially important to fight inequalities (e. g., making people who experience discrimination on a daily basis elsewhere feel safe enough to contribute their knowledge in Wikimedia spaces), to bring peace and justice and of course safety helps good health and well being.

We welcome sessions about safe growth on the movement’s journey towards the strategic direction 2030, protecting vulnerable groups of contributors, technical, social or other solutions to fight harassment, mitigating risks at events and from beyond the movement, protecting oneself when contributing in difficult environments, sessions about where to find help, sharing resources and solutions around safety on local wikis.

Please be aware that this space is assigned to a small boardroom, well suited for intimate discussions or workshops. Also be aware that we are very open to new session formats and welcome experiments!

  • Mitigating risks outside the Wikimedia spaces, like real-life stalking, sexting
  • Establishing and applying rules onwiki that help protect newbies, especially from vulnerable groups of contributors. Different methods might apply for different sizes of communities and cultural backgrounds, we would invite especially sessions that deal with these varieties of challenges.
  • Establishing and applying rules at Wikimedia events that help protect newbies in particular, especially from vulnerable groups of contributors
  • Dealing with crosswiki conflicts and/or harassment
  • Dealing with conflicts and/or harassment on small wikis
  • Mapping and addressing the different risks and dangers for Wikimedians in different parts of the world
  • Establishing a group of trusted people who know how to help in complex situations
  • Technical solutions to mitigating risks
  • Social solutions to mitigating risks
  • Online security beyond the Wikispaces
  • Addressing censorship
    • How to deal with the effects of censorship
    • How to address the censors depending of the type of government (‘hacking’ authoritarian regimes)

What does this actually mean?

[edit source]

"Establishing and applying rules at Wikimedia events that help protect newbies in particular, especially from vulnerable groups of contributors": it took me three read-throughs to get to what I think you're trying to say, but this actually reads "rules are devised to protect one vulnerable group from other vulnerable groups". I presume you mean "rules are devised to protect newbies in particular, particularly those from contributors who could be seen as vulnerable", or something similar. - SchroCat (talk) 21:23, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
