Event Platform

[edit source]

Hi! Just curious which online platform will the virtual Wikimania be taking place on? ApexAgunomu (talk) 14:57, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

ApexAgunomu: Thank you for reaching Wikimania COT. We are still looking for this. We look forward to have an online platform that is more user-friendly, that saves more bandwidth, and that is more adapted for mobile use than the Remo online platform. We will get in touch with you regarding this topic in the due course. --Csisc (talk) 15:59, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello again! Hope the Wikimania organizing is going well and I look forward to participating. I was just wondering if the online platform has been decided yet, as I would like to get comfortable using it on my phone before the actual event. Thank you! Local Breakouts

[edit source]

Do we need to fill out the application for "Local Breakouts"? I am planning to organise a local editathon event before/during/after this year's Wikimania with a small group of Wikipedians, and we would like to arrange and decide the date and place by ourselves. --さえぼー (talk) 04:49, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

さえぼー: You will need to fill a Scholarship application if you need your event to be funded and you also need to send a Program proposal about your local session. --Csisc (talk) 16:11, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Submission

[edit source]

I submitted a proposal via this form, and I saw the "Your survey responses have been recorded." message, but I did not receive any e-mail confirmation. Did it work? --さえぼー (talk) 04:39, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

さえぼー: Of course. --Csisc (talk) 09:30, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Maybe reconsider the use of the term "Open Space"?

[edit source]

Hi all, I believe your use of "Open Space" (with capital letters) may not be the best term to use for what appears to be an office hours session for Q&A. For events, the term "Open Space" has a very specific methodology and meaning in running an unconference, as can be seen here: "What’s an Open Space UNconference and how will it work?". This is not a theoretical concern either, as previous Wikimanias we have used the Open Space method in various ways (Cambridge, 2006; Mexico City, 2015; maybe more) during the conference. For that reason, I might suggest either:

  1. Relabeling these office hours as, well, office hours, or
  2. Lowercase the "Open Space" to just be open space, or open call.

TL;DR - I'm not sure why these sesions are named "Open Space" in quotes and in caps when it isn't the formal methodology. Folks might be confused about this naming collision. Thanks. - Fuzheado (talk) 11:39, 21 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Fuzheado! Thanks for your feedback and for providing context. The organizing team had actually considered the term “office hours” but decided against using it because it’s not universally understandable and translatable across multiple languages. Lowercasing the term to avoid confusion seems like a good compromise – we’ll keep that in mind and adjust communications. --Aced (talk) 14:45, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

No response regarding proposal

[edit source]

Hi, I submitted a proposal and got a confirmation of receipt and since then nothing. I have emailed to the person that sent me the confirmation of receipt, and no response. Could someone please get in touch with me? Thank you. DrThneed (talk) 22:04, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

How to participate without Pheedloop.com?

[edit source]

Hello everybody!

First of all thank you for organizing this year.

Is it possible to work together to make sure that https://pheedloop.com/ would be not the gate to join Wikimania?

We are the Wikimedia Movement, and 100% of our projects are designed with 100% Free and Open Source Software (since there is not Free Knowledge without Free Software) please understand my point of view: a party is being organized in my community, but I have to put my community values apart in order to join it.

I tried to describe some explainations in the page 2022:Present and future, as I've tried the previous year.

Thank you for your help! --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 09:20, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Guide to pre-recording Wikimania video?

[edit source]

Hi there, is there a guide to what tools are recommended for pre-recording video? I use Streamyard and I know Screencastify is a useful tool to directly record from a web browser to a WebM file, but I was wondering if there was already a guide or a list of recommended methods. Thanks. - Fuzheado (talk) 18:37, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm partially answering my own message after discovering the Google Doc sent to speakers has some more information about this, and is located at Wikimania_2022_festival_technology_guide. Thanks. - Fuzheado (talk) 19:38, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
FYI, if it was me, I would recommend these options in this order, based on ease of use and familiarity:
  1. Zoom. Everyone knows how to use it by now given the pandemic, and it's free, reliable and acceptable image quality to screen record and show webcam footage of the speaker. Saves as an MP4 file, so all you need to do is locate the file on your computer and upload to the right sharing location (Google Drive, Dropbox, et al)
  2. Screencastify. It's free, but does require use of a Chrome extension and some permissions boxes to use webcam and mic. But it does have the cleanest look with a professional looking video headshot. You need to move the video around to make sure it doesn't block the slides. The good news is it saves the video on Google Drive by default, so all you need to do is copy/paste the link to the recipient. Good news is uses WebM format by default, so it's ready for Wikimedia Commmons.
  3. Restream.io. Easy to use, but limited to 15 minutes per recording. Video can be a bit on the low quality side. Otherwise, very full featured.
  4. Others. Riverside.fm is a podcasting tool and not given to screen recording, though possible.
Hope this is useful. - Fuzheado (talk) 20:11, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

re. "How can I create a networking room?"

[edit source]

The FAQ mentions a "Networking" tab, but I see no such tab in the web interface. Adamw (talk) 12:07, 10 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
