Session title: FemNetz – Rhizomatic growth for diversity

- Track: Diversity & Inclusion

FemNetz is a transnational umbrella network of German-speaking Wikipedians and editing groups founded in 2019. United by feminist concerns and the desire for networking and mutual support, the non-hierarchical network weaves empowering connections between editors. Resembling a rhizome it grows roots and operates from nodes. The relationships form the basis for projects and collaborations. We support a welcoming culture for a Wikipedia that is readable and accessible for a broad variety of people. Five years after the network's kick-off and four FemNetzCons, we are currently in a process of remodelling aims and structures.
Description
[edit | edit source]FemNetz addresses specifically female users, but also users of all genders with an interest in feminist subjects / feminist concerns. With this poster we present FemNetz with its structure, its history and its activities. Our aim is to establish contacts with other networks of marginalized groups in the Wikiverse and to find out more about their structures and strategies.

- How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?
The concept of openness is inconceivable without embracing aspects of diversity and inclusion in a broader perspective as open-mindedness. Open knowledge limited to perspectives of priviledged societal groups is an obstacle to progress. FemNetz is a network promoting the visibility and participation of women and non-binary people within the Wikipedia community as well as sending impulses into mainstream society. By including diverse perspectives, FemNetz contributes to opening Wikipedia further to marginalized knowledge and a rejuvenation process.
- What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
Everyone can participate in this session
