Session title: Navigate the web with Wikidata.

Session type: Lightning talk
Track: Technology
Language: en

Wikidata is great for asking weird questions like "Who is the most famous child of a librarian?" (the answer will surprise you). But what use are all the external identifiers that make up 90% of the database? We'll learn how to use them to navigate the web.

Say you're on a webpage about a particular entity. Click the browser extension Entity Explosion to get links to other sites about that same entity. Data is live from Wikidata in any language.

We'll browse around to see how powerful you can be with Wikidata embedded in your browser.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Entity Explosion, developed as a Covid-lockdown project, is now used by over 1000 users weekly, and is a leading example of externally facing Wikidata-related tools that are designed to be used outside and with no knowledge of Wikidata.

The interface has recently been internationalized, so this is now truly accessible globally.

Full details about the extension and links are available at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Entity_Explosion

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

This browser extension gets better every time someone edits Wikidata. This ignites a virtuous cycle where external users are incentivised to join the collaboration to edit, even as they receive benefits from what has already been built.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session

I've been editing Wikimedia projects for 20 years. First on Wikipedia, then Commons, Wikidata, and Wikifunctions. I primarily edit about scientific and Australian topics, and have a particular passion for integrating external identifiers!
