A two-hour tutorial on ingesting open data into Wikidata using OpenRefine for absolute beginners.

Description

[edit | edit source]

NOTE THE TIME REQUESTED!

A *two-hour* tutorial on ingesting open data into Wikidata using OpenRefine. This is a very powerful tool that's a bit daunting to pick up on one's own, leaving whole communities behind on its adoption.

Based on a successful (and sadly unrecorded) run at Turkic Wikimedia Conference, I thought I would offer it again at Wikimania.

No knowledge of OpenRefine is assumed, but *basic familiarity* with Wikidata's core concepts (Items, properties, values) *is* assumed.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

Gaining the ability to ingest open data from external sources furthers our ability to collaborate across the Open.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session
