The Mesopotamian barbel, which lived in Turkiye, Syria, Iraq and Iran and was thought to be extinct, was found alive and was photographed by a Wikimedian and added to Wikimedia Commons.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The Mesopotamian barbel, photographed by the user KediÇobanı, was thought to be extinct. However, in 2023, a local fisherman caught this fish, and as a result of cooperation with academics, it was determined that this fish was a Mesopotamian barbel. Then KediÇobanı photographed these fish and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. Thus, for the first time, a freely licensed photograph of the Mesopotamian barbel, which was thought to be extinct but continues to live, was made available on the internet.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

The poster reflects that people who contribute to Wikimedia projects work collaboratively and produce good results. Because the fish article opened by another user on the English Wikipedia was translated into Turkish by KediÇobanı. Moreover, not only this, it was also photographed in a very exciting way, thus adding photography to this article. As a result, the article first opened by a user was translated into another language by another user. Thus, the user became aware of the existence of this fish and resulted in it being photographed.

This is Collaboration of the Open? It is a very concrete example for.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
