Session title: Wikidata XXX Days: engage and create connections with the Wikimedia community online

Session type: Lightning talk
Track: Contributor/Community Engagement
Language: en

In this session, we will present the “Wikidata XXX Days” event format run by the Wikidata development team since 2021 to engage with the worldwide Wikidata community online, and we’ll share some insights and what we learned from running these events.

Description

[edit | edit source]

How to engage with our community when it is spread all around the world, and when we cannot meet in person (because of pandemic, sustainability or administrative reasons)? That is what we have explored since 2021 with our online events to connect with the Wikidata community. Lexicodays, Data Quality Days, Data Modelling Days, Leveling Up Days, Data Reuse Days, online Wikidata birthday… over the years, we have been gathering the core Wikidata community as well as newcomers and people gravitating around our LOD planet with interactive online events. In a spirit of constant improvement, we’ve been iterating on each event, trying out formats, collaborative program-building, tools and topics, to create connections between people who are enthusiastic about Wikidata. We would like to share with you what we learned in three years of running these events, and how this format could be part of the future of events in the Wikimedia Movement, in an era where we need to find alternatives to onsite international events.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

The Wikidata XXX events are a great experience of collaboration where Wikimedia Deutschland and the Wikidata community design an event together, based on what they need. It’s been a bridge between the Wikidata development team and the community, leading to fruitful collaboration. We could also mention that the format of the event is open source, and people are welcome to use and adapt it - WMF did it for example with their Image Description Week https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_Description_Week

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?

Everyone can participate in this session
