Session title: Wikimedia Summit 2024 Follow-Up - Looking back and ahead

Session type: Roundtable
Track: Governance & Strategy (alternatively, Governance or Strategy)
Language: en

At the Wikimedia Summit 2024, affiliates gathered in Berlin to make progress on movement governance. They discussed the draft movement charter to provide input for the MCDC and discussed governance topics that go beyond the immediate charter content. This session will be an opportunity for people who attended the Summit to continue the conversations started in Berlin, to discuss what has happened since April 2024, and to create a joint understanding on the next steps, now that the Charter has not been ratified.

Description

[edit | edit source]

In April 2024, about 150 affiliate representatives met in Berlin during the Wikimedia Summit to discuss the Movement Charter, celebrate the parts that they like, highlight potential deal-breakers and have conversations around movement governance at large. The results of these deliberations were shared with the movement and included some workable feedback on the movement charter for the MCDC. After the Summit, a revised version of the Charter was published and failed to be ratified. In this session, we look back at the output generated at the Summit and discuss possible next steps to move forward on movement governance.

Expected outcome: - Participants know what has been discussed at the Wikimedia Summit and understand how it relates to the Movement Charter and Movement Governance generally. - Participants discuss what the next steps are to advocate for and/or implement the output of the Wikimedia Summit.

How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?

The future of movement governance will affect the work of every stakeholder in the movement and set the framework for how we collaborate in the future. We want to create a space for affiliates to discuss governance and reflect on how new entities might influence the way we work together as a movement.

What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
