2024:Program/Writing a woman from every country in the world
Session title: Writing a woman from every country in the world
- Session type: Poster
- Track: Diversity & Inclusion
- Language: en
In March 2024 I completed a challenge I set myself to start an article on English Wikipedia for a woman from every country in the world. In this lightning talk, I'll share five things I learned from the experience.
Description
[edit | edit source]Gender equity across the Wikimedia movement is something that we are all working towards. For my part, as an English Wikipedia editor volunteering with Women in Red, I've written about a wide range of women based on our monthly themes. My favourite focuses within the project are often the geographical ones and in 2021 I set myself the challenge to start an article for at least one woman from every country in the world. In 2024 I finished the challenge and the story was picked up by national and international press. This lightning talk shares five reflections on the experience.
- How does your session relate to the event theme, Collaboration of the Open?
Whilst I undertook the challenge as an individual editor, the learnings I will share emphasise the importance of collaboration and working with others. For example, many of the pages I worked on were translations from a wide range of languages. I also widely used Listeria to generate lists of women give me ideas. Both of these tools depend on the work of others in open collaboration.
- What is the experience level needed for the audience for your session?
Everyone can participate in this session
