Title: Attributing the sum of all human knowledge: WikiCite discussion Speaker: Phoebe Ayers, Diego de la Hera, Houcemeddine Turki, SJ Klein, Rod Page Abstract: What's the future of citations in Wikidata and on the Wikimedia projects? This session will highlight projects related to WikiCite and the future of citations and bibliographic metadata in the Wikimedia projects.
Citations form the basis of how we know what we know in Wikipedia and beyond. Citations provide attribution and provenance, and demonstrate reliability. Items about bibliographic data are also a major part of Wikidata, as a large portion of Wikidata items represent individual scientific publications. WikiCite is the name of the collaborative community that has developed around citation projects. There are currently many open questions, including what should technical infrastructure look like around bibliographic metadata, and what new citation projects could tell us about the world's diverse publications and how they are used in the Wikimedia projects. From 2016-2021 there was a funded initiative to support WikiCite initiatives. Now, the time is ripe for the community to discuss and build the next generation of WikiCite infrastructure and projects, and determine the future of citations on the Wikimedia projects. This session will give an introduction to WikiCite, and will feature four short lightning talks from community members (live and recorded) about various projects related to citations.
